Varsity Letter in Volunteer Service
Overview
Puyallup School District students in Grades 7 to 12 have the option to receive a Varsity letter if they participate in at least 150 unpaid community service hours in our community within a single year. This Program is completely optional, but these hours can be counted towards the 20 hours required for graduation.
"Community service means donating your time, skills, and energy to help others and improve the world around you without expecting anything in return."
Eligibility and Guidelines
- Examples of Community Service include:
- Communities In Schools
- March Gladness Projects
- Hospitals
- Non-profit Animal Services
- Any healthcare/illness-related non-profits
- Non-profit environmental agencies
- Senior Centers/Assisted Living Non-Profits
- City beautification projects
- Museums
- Veteran services
- Mission Trips
- Community service hours cannot be earned through:
- Paid activities
- Graded school assignments
- Personal participation in athletics, dance and fine arts activities (e.g., band, choir, theatre)
- Competitions or practice sessions
- Other personal enrichment activities
Students can earn a new letter each year that they meet the requirements. However, hours from previous school years cannot be carried over to current year.
Verification of hours by supervisor is now required through the student's SchooLinks account.
How to enter hours in SchooLinks
-
Log into SchooLinks, navigate to the Engage section on the left and select Experience Tracking and then Community/Volunteer service.
-
Enter all of your volunteer hours here. This single total will count toward both your graduation requirements and your Varsity Letter goals.
-
If you still need assistance, an instructional video located in the "Community and Volunteer Service" portion of your SchooLinks homepage lessons is available also.
Important: Please DO NOT log your hours in a single lump sum (for example, May 1, 2026, to October 20, 2026). You must list daily entries so administrators can verify the hours were completed within the current yearly time frame.
Information for the 2026-27 School Year
- All qualifying volunteer hours must be completed between May 15, 2026, and May 12, 2027.
- Submission deadline: Wednesday, May 12, 2027.
